[Kurzwort] das, -s, Gentamizin, aus Kulturfiltraten verschiedener Micromonospora-Arten gewonnenes Breitbandantibiotikum aus der Gruppe der Aminoglykosidantibiotika; besteht im Wesentlichen aus drei Komponenten, die (ähnlich wie Streptomycin) aus Aminozuckern aufgebaut sind. Gentamicin ist wirksam gegen verschiedene grampositive und gramnegative Erreger (z. B. Kolibakterien, Staphylokokken und Streptokokken, Proteusarten) und wird v. a. bei schweren Infektionen mit gramnegativen Problemkeimen (z. B. Knochenmarkentzündung, Herzinnenhautentzündung) angewendet. Außerdem dient es zur Lokalbehandlung von Augen- und Hautinfektionen.
